Empty Hand Anyos
When Prof. Remy taught Modern Arnis back in The Philippines, he taught beginners, students with no martial arts experience whatsoever. When he began teaching in the United States, however, he was primarily teaching already established or trained martial artists. He was teaching seminars, not in his own established school as he had back in the homeland. Most of the martial artists he taught were “strikers,” that is to say, karate, taekwondo, tang soo do, kenpo and kung fu practitioners. These are all stand-up kicking and punching arts and they all have one thing in common – they train in the solo exercises. The term for the solo exercise in Japanese and Okinawan karate is ‘kata.’ It is ‘poomse’ or ‘hyung’ in Korean martial arts.
One of the many ways he was able to reach such a diversified group of martial arts practitioners was through the use of Anyos or kata. He created eight empty hand anyo to construct a catalog of striking, joint-locking and throwing techniques all contained in Modern Arnis. Five of them were documented in the first video set he released in the 1980s. The final three went undocumented by him. This book series is the remedy to that omission.
This first book in the Modern Arnis Anyo series covers the first empty hand anyo, Anyo Isa. I have used Motion Application Theory to demonstrate the many, many possibilities of self-defense applications contained in this brief form – over 50 in all.
Read on and may your thinking about anyo/kata never be the same.
Book Review:
“Martial Arts Are A Specialized Realm
Coaches and their wisdom save you from learning the hard way. That is what Dan Anderson is doing for you here. He is helping you, serving as a specialist coach, saving you time, and maybe some embarrassment. Dan Anderson has created a path for you. It is not a stale archived regurgitation of an unexamined principal. This book is born of a long fruitful journey. And he is sharing the results of that journey with you. You would be wise to study what Dan Anderson is sharing with you. You would be wise to break the ideas down, work them and reassemble them.”
